Kao summary of consolidated business results for 1Q FY 2009: fabric and home care

Kao Corp's sales from its fabric and home care segment rose to Yen 65 bn in 1Q FY 2009 (three months ended 30 Jun 2009) from Yen 63.9 bn in 1Q FY 2008 (period ended 30 Jun 2008), while operating income increased to Yen 12.5 bn from Yen 10.3 bn. Japanese sales of fabric care products were firm with the launching of the improved Attack laundry detergent and new products Humming Flair fabric softener and Haiter fabric bleach. The higher sales in home care products were attributed to the strong sales of Cucute washing detergent and efforts to boost the Haiter brand with the launching of new products such as drain cleaner and washing machine cleaner. The decline in raw material prices and sales growth from active launches of new and improved products resulted in higher operating income.
