โœฆ Synopsis

Abstract

Hemoglobin polymorphism was detected in a population of adult cutthroat trout by employing starch gel electrophoresis. Variation occurred only in the cathodally migrating hemoglobins. Six electrophoretic patterns were assumed to be present; however, the existence of a greater degree of complexity has not been ruled out. Eight of the 93 adult cutthroat trout sampled displayed a hemoglobin electrophoretic pattern identical to that obtained from adult rainbow trout.

Nine hemoglobins were purified from blood of Salmo clarki by ion-exchange chromatography and preparative isoelectric focusing. The subunit structures of eight of the purified hemoglobins were studied by electrophoresis of globins in the presence of urea. Six are alpha 2 beta 2 tetramers while two ap
