ONE FIGURE

The influence of hydrostatic pressure on the equilibrium between hemoglobin and oxyhemoglobin in solution is of interest from at least 2 points of view. I n the first place, the mechanisni of this reaction is not well understood, and any pronounced shifting of the equilibrium under pressure would presumably indicate considerablc clinnge in the configuration of the protein accompanying the oxygenation and dissociation. Through the effects of hydrostatic pressure, large volume increases, of the order of 50 to 100 em3 per mole, have heen shown to occur in the reversible denaturation of intracellular (Brown, Johnson and Jiarsland, '42; rTohrison, Eyring et al., '45) and exon Growth.
