✦ Synopsis

Divorce is one of the most distressing life-events happening to a large number of children, adolescents and parents: one third of all children in the US and in several West-European countries. It is a painful and shocking experience that may disturb the psychological and social balance of the child and the family and have a heavy impact on the normal development of children. Edward Teyber addresses the question how parents as well as professionals may contribute to coping with divorce and find constructive answers to problems and tensions related to this phenomenon.

After a general introduction (part 1) the book discusses the 'changing American family' and the effects of divorce on children. Three main parts follow:

-Children's concerns during the break up (part 2) -Guidelines for parents (part 3) -Child-rearing after divorce (part 4)
