โœฆ Synopsis

A priori calculations of the helium diatom polarizability are combined with an evaluation of the pair distribution function of gaseous helium to yield the second dielectric virial coefficient at 4 and 322ยฐK. Order of magnitude agreement with experimental data is found, but the isotopic dependence at 4ยฐK is in conflict with experimental data.

The differential diffusion Monte Carlo method, involving correlated random walks, is used to calculate the static polarizabilities of molecular hydrogen and helium by application of a finite electrostatic field. The results are for molecular hydrogen (~,=4.60(3) au; (Y, =6.38(S) au; for helium LY= 1
