β¦ Synopsis
Heinz Steinitz, the senior marine biologist of Israel, died of a sudden brain hemorrhage at the height of his pioneer work. A tireless enthusiast, he lectured on the future of Red Sea research the very day before his death. The theme of his lecture --as that of his entire life --was the basic duty of a human community to fully investigate, and put in value, its own corner of the world.
There was a unique consistency to his scientific career. He took over the scientific legacy of his father, Walter Steinitz, in a rare example of a father-son sequence. Like his father, Heinz Steinitz was a medical doctor who turned to zoology. When he came to Palestine to obtain his second degree, he became, in 1938, the recipient of the first Ph. D. in Zoology, awarded by the young Hebrew University.
His thesis on citrus scale insects under the direction of Professor ~. S. Bodenheimer did not lead him to entomology. He took up his father's interest in histology and ichthyology.
