β¦ Synopsis
The origin of heavy fermions in the f-electron compounds with nearly integer valence is discussed. General arguments in favor of uncharged Fermi excitations of spin origin as quasiparticles giving a main contribution to low-temperature thermodynamics are presented. Various experiments (frequency dependent conductivity, De Haas-Van Alphen effect, superconducting phase transition) are reviewed from this point of view.
