✦ Synopsis
Pluid-to-particle heat transfer measurements in fixed bed were performed via microwave heating technique. The selective absorption of microwave power by the particles alone achieved constant uniformity in the solid temperature within the bed. Thus it successfully separated the fluid-to-particle heat transfer mode from the particle-to-particle mode.
Based on the experimental data, a model for heat transfer mechanism in a fixed bed was proposed to consist of (i) conductive heat transfer with motionless fluid; (ii) effect of fluid flow on conduction; and (iii) heat transfer due to convection alone. The sum of the above three modes as predicted was then compared with data reported in literature for total heat transfer in fixed beds and showed very good agreement.
