โฆ Synopsis
There are several works 1-6 on thermal analysis of liquid helium dewars and attempts to reduce the evaporation rate of the dewar. However, at present, an accurate analytical study may not be possible due to the radiant heat input by "funnelling; down through the neck tube. /n this work, the radiant heat input from the top surface to the bath has been calculated accurately as far as possible, and verified by many experimental checks. Furthermore, "apparent solid conduction; ie that determined from the balance of the heat inputs to the liquid column and to the vapour column, has been investigated experimentally and theoretically.

It is likely that a quench in the cable-in-conduit internally cooled superconductor (CCICS) is started by a quench of a single strand of the cable caused by strand motion. The disturbance due to strand motion is highly localized and of short duration. Therefore, to determine the stability of CCICS,
