โœฆ Synopsis

Abstract

Headโ€toโ€head polyisobutylene degrades at a maximum rate at 320ยฐC, a temperature about 65ยฐC lower than headโ€toโ€tail polyisobutylene. Under our conditions, headโ€toโ€tail (the regular polyisobutylene) degrades (as do many other disubstituted vinyl monomers) to a high yield of the monomer isobutylene. Surprisingly, headโ€toโ€head polyisobutylene also degraded, primarily to isobutylene. Liquid, lowโ€molecular compounds, probably dimers, were also obtained from headโ€toโ€tail and headโ€toโ€head polyisobutylene. A mechanism of this degradation is proposed.
