✦ Synopsis

The workshop was conceived as a platform to allow researchers and experimenters from different organizations to exchange their designs and solutions to the problems of taking mass spectrometers out of the lab and into a variety of harsh environments. The attendees originated from academia and government laboratories. The deployment of mass spectrometers in space, in the atmosphere, on the ground (including the battlefield), and under water was addressed by the various groups in attendance.

The workshop opened with a talk given by Tim Short [University of South Florida (USF)] entitled "Mass Spectrometry on an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle." Tim explained about the need in the oceanographic field for in situ measurements of chemical parameters and showed the modular design of the USF's sample introduction chamber/mass spectrometer/vacuum system that will be inserted into an autonomous underwater vehicle this fall. The sample interface from the mass analyzer vacuum to the water is accom-

Environmental analytical chemistry has recently changed focus from analysis of non-polar, persistent contaminants (e.g. polychlorinated biphenyls and dioxins) to more polar and labile compounds that interfere with biological processes. For example, natural and synthetic estrogens and their metabolit
