None of these criticisms of the publication quality need necessarily detract from the value of a book, and technical shortcomings may well be overlooked when important contributions are rushed into print so quickly. Many of the papers presented here, however, are either brief reviews of well-researched subjects, or updates of previously published work, and in this case the quality of the production seems less excusable.

Despite these shortcomings, the number and diversity of papers and opinions provide an interesting insight into many aspects of the subject which might otherwise remain obscure. In this respect, Tomoda and Hironaga's paper on the effects of earthquakes on fish catches is a gem. The bibliographies and the review papers will also provide easy access to a wide body of literature on the causes of fish stock fluctuations.
