Harold bringt sich gerne um. Er hat das gleiche Hobby wie sein Namensvetter aus »Harold and Maude«, einem amerikanischen Film aus den Siebzigern. Ansonsten hat er nichts mit ihm zu tun.Er ist 49 Jahre alt, lebt in London und hat gerade seine Anstellung als Wurstfachverkäufer verloren. Donnerstags spielt er Bridge mit drei alten Damen. Ein ganz normales Leben, bis der elfjährige Melvin an seine Tür klopft. Melvin sucht seinen Vater, und Harold willigt ein, ihn bei der Suche quer durch England und Irland zu begleiten. Sie treffen Humphrey Bogart, Jonny Danger, das Rosarote Badeschaf und Miss Pink Flamingo. Und das geht nicht immer gut aus. Harold bereut seine Hilfsbereitschaft spätestens, als er die Queen überfährt.
