✦ Synopsis

A new harmonic model for shape transformations is presented. In this model, the harmonic functions are governed by the Laplace equation. This model can convert an image or a pattern to another with an arbitrary shape. Also the transformation process is harmonic, without abruptness and discontinuity. Such properties make the model very useful in computer vision, image processing, and pattern recognition. For instance, this model can be used to generate and recognize handwritten Roman letters, Chinese characters, fingerprints, and other types of digitized images and patterns. Examples of such applications are illustrated in this paper. The techniques proposed can be readily applied to other transformations developed from the solutions of boundary value problems of partial differential eqUatiOUS.

The morphology of filamentous microorganisms in submerged culture is of great interest. On the one hand, morphology influences rheology and mass transfer in the fermentation broth. On the other hand, morphology could be a visible expression of physiology and metabolism of the microorganisms. An algo
