β¦ Synopsis
The occurrence of harelip and cleft palate has been reported in several species of mammals, including cattle, sheep, dogs, and lions (Rischbieth, '10). I n man the defect is a common one, and is generally recognized as due to hereditary causes. The exact manner of the inheritance, however, has been subject to much doubt, some pedigrees suggesting inheritance as an imperfect mendelian dominant; others, inheritance as a simple recessive.
The appearance of harelip and cleft palate in the writers' colony of mice has enabled them to make a thorough study of the genetics of the trait. The defect arose as a mutation in a stock of albinos obtained from the Bussey Institution, a stock which in turn probably traces back to the Bagg strain of albinos. Since the first affected individuals were found in April, 1930, the trait has been under continuous investigation.
