Por medio de la edición de Hapworth 16, 1924, intentó acabar con su propio mito. ¿Por qué? Porque ese es, quizás, uno de sus cuentos más herméticos. Fue publicado en 1965 por The New Yorker y, bajo la forma de una carta ensimismada y aburrida, presenta a Seymour Glass, el personaje adorado por los lectores, como un niño engreído y detestable. En el 97, cuando ese relato fue editado como libro, nadie quiso comentarlo.
