In the early 1950s, anyone familiar with Hans Hornung might have been forgiven for not anticipating the contributions he would make to the world of fluid dynamics. Born in 1934 to German parents living in Palestine, he attended a German primary school at Wilhelma, near Jaffa. In 1948, he emigrated to Australia along with his family and attended Box Hill High School in Victoria-for one year, after which he dropped out and began working as a farmhand. Someone convinced him that he should return to school, so he began taking correspondence courses and night school classes through the Royal Melbourne Technical College, matriculating in 1956. He began studies in mechanical engineering at the University of Melbourne, completing his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree with honors in 1960 and his Master of Engineering Science degree, also with honors, in 1962.
