✦ Synopsis
I read with interest the paper on missed fractures in the accident department by Freed, Naomi, and Shields (October 1984;13:900-904).
They state in the article that "the medical literature has scant information on fractures of which x-ray manifestations were overlooked by ED personnel." Over the past few years there have been a number of papers dealing with this subject from accident departments in this country. The papers by de Lacey, Mucci, and Carew-McColl 1-3 are examples but by no means an exhaustive list.
Accident and emergency medicine is a fairly new specialty in the UK, but we have a great interest in research, and many publications from our departments are appearing in journals such as Injury and Archives of Emergency Medicine. I realize that these journals may not be widely available in the US, but perhaps authors might think about the UK literature when researching papers for publication.
