We have proposed and discussed a simple procedure which can greatly facilitate the computation of scattering parameters in electromagnetic simulators. The method is valid for any network having multimode ports as long as the corresponding waveguides are reciprocal. Using this, substantial CPU time and memory requirement reductions can be obtained. Improvements first result from the fact that S-parameters can be computed even when waveguide ports exhibit different cross sections. This can generally help in reducing the size of the simulated structures. Furthermore, as the determination and normalization of the electromagnetic fields is no longer necessary, the corresponding postprocessing is suppressed. This useful normalization procedure can be easily implemented in any electromagnetic simulator.
