For the best ionizing solvents, the isomerization of 5 c(, 6 ,B-dibromide is formulated with the aid of a bromonium bromide ion-pair which returns to the covalent condition ("internal return").

It is considered probable that the nature of the intermediate changes gradually as the ionizing power of the solvent decreases until, in the poorest ionizing solvents, a n intermediate or transition state is involved with negligible charge separation, both bromine atoms then being essentially equivalent.
