I n order to understand and, more importantly, to predict the effect of pollutants on marine ecosystems, it is necessary to enclose or capture the ecosystem, perturbate it with known amounts of a pollutant, and compare it with an unpolluted ecosystem by making measurements on those processes which are most likely to influence population stability." Ein erstes bemerkenswertes Ergebnis war der scharfe Riickgang des Zooplanktons in den 50 ppb Cu ausgesetzten Behiiltern. Es bleibt abzuwarten, ob diese Experimente die hohen Anspriiche der Planung erfullen werden.
