✦ Synopsis
This third volume completes the series about thePesmids of New Zealand. The first volume was published in 1986, followed by the second volume two years later.
Vol. 111 contains descriptions of 262 taxa and keys for identifying them. Stclurusrrrim is represented by 169 taxa and Srnurodesmiis by 61; 32 other taxa are grouped in 9 genera of filamentous desmids. Descriptions of 13 new taxa mostly new combinations, are included. Each taxon is illustrated by drawings, arranged in taxonomic order on 85 plates at the end of the book. These drawings often were not made according original samples from New Zealand but the authors have chosen the typus or other material. The detailed descriptions of the taxa are completed by information about the occurrences both in New Zealand and other localities. The descriptions are easy to use and arranged in alphabetical order. This main chapter of the book is supplemented by a lot of useful compilations, maps, tables and addenda containing information about the geographical and ecological characters of sampling stations including nice photographs of the localities. The lists of collectors and the special collections of E. PERCIVAL and R. LENZENWEGER are also given. The volume contains short biographs of 6 prominent desmidiologists, a glossary, a species index and a comprehensive bibliography. The book is a profound and informative floristical work.
