In the May issue of HRC + CC you published a paper by Jenkins and Jennings on sample introduction in capillary GC [l].The paper summarizes guidelines on splitless and on-column sampling. The part on splitless injection is indeed comprehensive and certainly very useful for many readers. The part on on-column injection, however, could have been more definite. It mightwell be an accurate picture of the present situation. Many recent papers have contributed to the general confusion by reporting results which did not consider already known problems. Many suggestions are valuable but they have limitations concerning sample solvent, sample size, temperature or volatility range of components. For the user who has no time for extensive experimentation with the sampling technique it is important to know these limitations. Otherwise he will probably prefer to use a less sophisticated method which he knows will not cause any problems.
