✦ Synopsis

Energy and Atmosphere L L EED recognizes efforts to improve the building envelope and electrical and mechanical systems in order to conserve energy use, which is predominately derived from nonrenewable sources. As mentioned in earlier sections of this book, USGBC emphasizes energy reductions. If a building uses less electricity, then the CO 2 emissions related to that energy generation are also reduced. In LEED 2009, the Energy and Atmosphere section constitutes 32 percent of all points available, a signifi cant increase in emphasis on energy. The fi rst major change is in the baseline standard used to benchmark energy use in a building. The most current version of LEED uses a default of ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA 90.1 -2007. The second change is through the reallocation of points related to the optimization of systems and the production of on -site renewable energy used in the building.

This section of the rating system is also where an unsuspecting contractor can be saddled with design obligations. Certain credits within this category have been defi ned by USGBC as construction submittals. While some of the credits within this section of the rating system are listed as construction submittals, they must be incorporated into the design if the contractor is going to assume any responsibility in their achievement.
