This issue contains a selection of the contributions presented during the 'European Intensive Course on Land-Use Problems, Planning and Management in the Coastal Zone', of the Council of Europe, held in Bilbao, in October 1987.

The editor and the authors express their sincere thanks to the Division of Higher Education and Research of the Council of Europe and to the Departamento de Urbanismo, Vivienda y Medio Ambiente of the Basque Government, for their support, which made the organisation of the European Intensive Course possible, and for their permission to use material from the course for the preparation of this special issue of Ocean and Shoreline Management.
