โฆ Synopsis
a flophemesyl derivative. In the latter spectrum, an allylic cleavage between the first two double bonds is reflected by the ion at m/z 392, and allylic and vinylic cleavages between the second and third double bonds are reflected by ions at m/z 432 and 420. These data yield useful information about double-bond location in USFAs (8), and structurally informative fragment ions in these spectra are produced by cleavage of bonds remote from the charge site on the flophemesyl ester moiety.
In conclusion, the present method is described in which the compounds of saturated and mono-or polyunsaturated FAs are derivatized to their respective flophemesyl esters. The flophemesyl derivatives are readily prepared, have excellent chromatographic properties, and in complex mixtures, can distinguish between the saturation and the degree of unsaturation. Also, concerning the identification of SFAs in several matrices, it is an especially advantageous method for detection and characterization. Because the M-15 ion is the most intense, the use of these derivatives facilitates the measurement of the molecular weight of trace amounts of unknown acids with much greater confidence than is possible when using other derivatives.
