✦ Synopsis

Abstract

Evaporation fog (sea smoke, steam fog) occurs during the advection of cold air over warm water. Current knowledge of the structure of unstable surface layers is used to predict the height of the fog patches as a function of the meteorological conditions. A possible application is the estimation of an increase of fog frequency due to discharge of cooling water.

An inversion‐capped mixed layer model is developed, which describes the transformation of the temperature and humidity characteristics of the cold air mass. The results agree with the observation that evaporation fog is usually restricted to coastal waters.
