Studies on ergochrome biosynthesis with "C-labelled acetate'\*' and 14C-and 'H-labelled emodin (2)2,3 are consistent with the pathway octaketide (1) + anthraquinone (2) + benzophenone carboxylic ester (3) + tetrahydroxanthone (4) + ergochrome (e.g. !a-4a), but do not exclude dimerization of ,2 or so
