On Mr Gao's figures, China's consumption of iron oxides has increased at an average rate of 12.3% per annum between 1997 and 2001. If that growth rate is maintained over the next five years, consumption will reach 308,000 tonnes by 2006. Such growth in domestic consumption might go some way towards mopping up China's production surplus, but would still leave up to 100,000 tonnes/y available for export. Clearly Chinese supplies will continue to exert a major impact on the world iron oxide pigments industry.
