โœฆ Synopsis

Gilbert Abbott awakened upon a plush-covered table in a turret atop the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Dr. J. C. Warren had just removed a tumor from Abbott's mandible, yet Abbott could not recall that he had had any pain. This, of course, was the historic public demonstration of the administration of ether by Dr. William Thomas Green Morton, a dentist. "Gentlemen, this is no humbug," were the words Dr. Warren used on that occasion. He felt it necessary to make this statement because in those days of patent medicine and doubtful practices there was much of humbug in the land, and it was injurious to the profession and patient alike.
