โœฆ Synopsis

BOOK REVIEWS

Finally, additional chapters deal with the landscaping of rural settlements, the sylviculture and management of farm forests and the planning and execution ot fieldprotecting afforestation. The well-illustrated book contains also numerous tables, graphs and line drawings, as well as a most comprehensive bibliography of Russian references.

The Israel Program for Scientific Translations is to be complimented for making this book available to the reader of English since it constitutes a most valuable textbook and reference book on many facets of afforestation in the Soviet Union. By providing a clear picture of current views and practices the handbook enables the unbiased reader to draw his own conclusions on the present status of afforestation and shelterbelt forestry in the U.S.S.R. On the whole, Russian foresters appear to be much more conservative than their European and American counterparts and hardly any new ideas appear to have emerged in the last years.

Except for some erroneous technical terms the translation by Professor A. Gourevich reads welt and the general presentation of the handbook is of the high level that has over the years become the trademark of the Jerusalem publisher.
