โฆ Synopsis
COVER PICTURE
The cover picture shows the use of self-assembled monolayers in a variety of different research areas. By controlling the chemistry on monolayers, it is possible to manipulate physical properties like wettability. A variety of chemical transformations can be carried out to facilitate the synthesis of complex biomolecules on the surface, induce the growth of polymer brushes or the attachment of biomolecules in a controlled way. The Microreview by T. P. Sullivan and W. T. S. Huck on p. 17ff gives an overview of all classes of reactions that have been performed on SAMs and discusses the fundamental difficulties related to synthesis on monolayers, focussing on issues like steric hindrance, characterization, determination of yields and possibilities for multistep synthesis.
