✦ Synopsis

This paper examines the usefulness of a graph theoretic approach in intra-urban network flow estimation. Earlier use of the graph theory in transport studies focused on regional networks. In this paper, the same ideas are applied to an intra-urban transport network. A transport network consists of geographic locations and the routes, by which they are interconnected in space. These locations are interpreted in graph theoretic applications to transport as the nodes or vertices, and the routes as links or edges. In the conventional regional scale application of the technique, settlements are nodes and the routes, links in a network. In this study, however, the nodes are considered as intersections or junctions and the roads as links in the intra-urban network. This enables us to abstract an urban road network as a graph and evaluate the appropriateness of the technique in intra-urban transport network flow estimation.
