It is possible to graft vinyl monomers, such as acrylonitrile, onto polystyrene via anionic processes but not by a radical process. Both homopolymerization of the added acrylonitrile and graft copolymerization in which acrylonitrile units are added to the para position on the benzene ring in styrene

โฆ Synopsis
Poly(styrene-graft-isobutylene) (PS-graft-PIB) and poly(styrene-graft-chlorobutyl) (PSgraft-Cl-IIR) have been synthesized by the grafting of PIB and Cl-IIR onto polystyrene waste in conjunction with AlCl 3 /HCl as catalyst. The grafting efยฎciency (GE) and overall graft composition have been studied. The synthesized graft polymers were puriยฎed and characterized by IR and 1 H NMR analysis. Thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to study the thermal characteristics of the graft. It is shown that the grafting induces better thermal stability for polystyrene.
