John Bunyan's "Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners," is a priceless literary classic that communicates the author's anguish over his sin, his confession of sin, and the life-changing impact of God's saving grace. Written while John Bunyan was imprisoned for holding unlicensed church services, "Grace Abounding" was published in 1666. "Grace Abounding," which is really John Bunyan's autobiography, is the unsparing account of one man's spiritual journey from atheism and blasphemy to devout Christianity. Though a reckless and profane youth led John Bunyan to despair by telling him that he had committed unforgivable sins, two religious books belonging to Bunyan's wife set him on the straight and narrow and a lifetime of pious devotion. Honest and unblinking in his self-assessment, John Bunyan saw it as his duty to tell his story in order to comfort all those struggling with their faith. This classic of religious literature continues to be essential reading for the faithful and for students of great English literature. During his lifetime, John Bunyan authored nearly sixty books, nine of which were written while he was in prison for unlicensed preaching. His works include The Pilgrim's Progress, The Life and Death of Mr. Badman, and The Holy War. "Grace Abounding," a wonderful addition to those titles, makes for a stirring and edifying devotional.
John Bunyan (16281688) was an English Christian writer and preacher, famous for writing The Pilgrim's Progress. Though he was a Reformed Baptist, in the Church of England, he is remembered with a Lesser Festival on 30 August. In his autobiographical book, Grace Abounding, Bunyan describes himself as having led an abandoned life in his youth, and as having been morally reprehensible as a result. However, there appears to be no evidence that he was outwardly worse than the average of his neighbors. Examples of sins to which he confesses in Grace Abounding are profanity, dancing and bell-ringing.
