powered vehicle by 2020, and be able to refuel it near their homes and places of work.
A growing number of countries have committed to accelerate their development of hydrogen energy technologies, but multinational cooperation is seen as vital to establishing a safe and efficient worldwide infrastructure to support these technologies.
Astris JV to operate former H Power facility
QuΓ©bec-based CareAction Inc has acquired the multi-million-dollar MontrΓ©al fuel cell laboratory and production facility formerly owned and operated by New Jersey-based H Power. The facility will be operated by Astris Transportation Systems Inc (ATSI), the joint venture between CareAction and Ontario-based Astris Energi.
The nearly new, world-class 28 000 ft 2 (2600 m 2 ) plant, together with most of its experienced technical and operations personnel, became available as a result of Plug Power's recent acquisition of H Power [FCB, May 2003]. The facility, used by H Power to develop and manufacture PEM-based fuel cells, will now produce alkaline fuel cells.
Securing this fully equipped plant is expected to greatly advance the joint venture's fuel cell production schedule. Initial output will concentrate on alkaline fuel cell power plants for small vehicles, the first of which will be the Zenn electric mini-car scheduled to roll out before the end of 2003.
