In the Bricks, extreme violence is the norm, but Ilya wants no hand in it. He�s a slave, lucky enough to be employed at the only theater in the area that still uses fake blood. After being born into one of the slave Houses that form the economical backbone of the Bricks, Ilya was purchased as a child and has managed to steer clear of the depravity ever since. But that changes when a dangerous admirer starts sending him gruesome gifts. Ilya�s boss hires someone to watch him: Alec, an independent contractor whose chief violence business is protection. But as Ilya spends more time with him, he begins to wonder: Is Alec really safer than this so-called dangerous admirer? Can the person who seems to understand him best really be so bad? When the admirer�s identity is revealed, Ilya must decide just how much violence he�s willing to accept, if it means he won�t have to go back to the dark place he came from.
