✦ Synopsis
The cross-sectional echocardiographic findings in aortic ring abscess due t o bacterial endocarditis have previously been reported.' We describe a patient with acute infective endocarditis due to Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Extensive involvement of the aortic valve, aortic root, and anterior mitral leaflet was demonstrated by echocardiography.
ECHOCARDIOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUES
Cross-sectional echocardiography was performed with a Varian V-3000. M-mode recordings were made with both the Varian V-3000 and the Smith-Kline Ekoline. M-mode images were recorded on Smith-Kline echograph paper.
CASE REPORT
A 29-yr-old taxi driver was admitted to the Dorn Veterans' Hospital on Feb. 25, 1980, with a three-week history of myalgia, night sweats, and chills. The patient's illness began with a sore throat. There was no history of urethral discharge or pain. The patient denied recent extramarital sexual contact and stated that he did not use intravenous drugs. There was no past history of heart disease.
Blood pressure was 120/0. His pulse was bounding, 100 per minute, and regular. The temperature was 101.5 F. The cardiac examination revealed a normally positioned but thrusting left ventricular impulse. The first heart sound was normal. The aortic component of the second heart sound was decreased in intensity. A grade III/VI holosystolic murmur was heard at the apex with
