β¦ Synopsis
Two patients with active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) developed polyarthritis which was documented to be due to gonococcal infection. One patient simultaneously had LE cells and intracellular diplococci in her synovial fluid. Similarities and differences between SLE and gonococcal arthritis are discussed. The coincidence of SLE and gonococcal arthritis reemphasizes bacteremias as a curable cause of polyarthritis in patients with SLE.
