Especially in mineral geology the geologist and the mineral engineer are forced to work in at least four leading languages with their enormous number of special terms. The author admits, in conformity with Ortega y Gasset, the limited possibilities of replacing one special term by one of another language, but he took the risk, and he has succeeded, as the critic must acknowledge. The new glossary of mining geology has its main contents in ore mining, whilst the other mining problems, especially coal, are treated in a less detailed way. The principal difficulty of such a glossary lies in the difference between the original meaning and definition of a term and the alterations made in the last decades. In the main, the definitions and their translations into three other languages seem to be realized very perfectly. With single terms another definition or explanation could be preferred, but this is not intended as too sharp a criticism. Some expressions which are evidently used only in a very narrow circle of specialists could be omitted; e.g. "manto" which is known only to some South American mining engineers. In many cases the
