Abstract
With the explosive growth of communications technologies, organizations are facing new ethical challenges in using, gathering, storing, and sharing information that can cast them in a negative light and lead to restrictions on how they conduct business. As Yahoo!, Microsoft, and Google discovered, developing agreed‐upon principles and guidelines to direct behavior, co‐drafted by a range of stakeholders, is a practical step toward maintaining the public's trust while preserving organizational business models and protecting human rights. Moreover, their experience with the Global Network Initiative offers practical lessons on how to effectively forge multistakeholder collaboration to address complex policy. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
