involved over the years). The layout of the book is clear and attractive, although the general standard of reproduction of photographs, particularly relating to fieldwork, leaves something to be desired. In several instances the latter problem is offset by excellent section drawings.

This book is obviously essential reading for archaeologists of all persuasions and contains much of relevance for anyone interested in Quaternary science. It is interesting, however, to speculate, as Martin Bell does, on whether the project's greatest overall contribution in the future may not be to field archaeology, but to the ever broadening conservation debate.
