Lest our readers think we are not in step with the times, we have chosen to take a retrospective glance at the Twentieth Century in this editorial and then to look ahead into the Twenty-first Century in the January 2000 editorial. In this editorial, we made no attempt to include the history of science education

This article contains the hitherto unpublished text of Arthur Cayley's inaugural professorial lecture given at Cambridge University on 3 November 1863. Cayley chose a historical treatment to explain the prevalent basic notions of analytical geometry, concentrating his attention in the period (1638-1
