Gland packing seals from the Ukraine Pusher seals designed to meet API 682
In the Laboratory of Vibro-Reliability and Sealing Systems at Sumy University, in the Ukraine, a gland packing seal with an axially and radially moveable gland box has been developed which provides uniformity of pressure on the packing. As a result, seal life has been considerably increased and leakage simultaneously reduced.
Operation of the seal on the condensate pumps of the Ignalia nuclear power station, Litva, has shown that in comparison with the old, conventional design, the unit life has increased 4-6 times, and leakage has decreased by a lactor of 8-10.
The university has also developed an automatic system for the design of seals under varying conditions, such as temperature and tightness. The system provides: l choice of seal design for given operating conditions. l calculation of the parameters of construction. l temperature calculations, and if necessary, cooling system options and calculations. l calculation of the principle reliability parametersthe probable operating life under the given conditions.
