β¦ Synopsis
Stephen Dusack is a recent emigrant from South Africa; he has been working in England for only a short time; he knows few people. In fact he is almost totally anonymous. On a train trip to London there is a crash. Stephenβs injuries are not serious, but during his recovery he discovers he is suffering from mild amnesia.
Inexplicably he is befriended by a Howard Downey who insists Stephen recuperate at the home of Howardβs employer -- the wealthy but misanthropic recluse David Orme. With no recourse, Stephen hesitantly accepts this offer of strange hospitality.
From the moment he enters Buckley House, Stephen knows he is battling both for his sanity and his life. By insinuation he realizes he is really thought to be David Orme by the servants, and by Downey himself.
Seeking to relive his past, Stephen finds that every trace of his short existence in England has been obliterated. Is he then in fact really David Orme? If so, who benefits if he is? Stephen Dusack must either be a victim of his own mind verging on insanity or the unwitting center of a weird conspiracy with madness or death the grim conclusion.
