In the United States, banks publish glossy four-page testimonials of their liquidity. In Italy, it is not unusual for banks to underwrite literary and other projects which contribute more to the institutions' weighty reputation than to their more mundane cbffers. In the preface to this hefty two-volume tribute to Vilfredo Pareto, published by the Banca Commerciale Italiana, Giovanni Busino confesses to a pair of ulterior motives for assembling this intellectual biography: to chart disparate and heretofore inaccessible tributaries of Pareto scholarship (both by and about Pareto), and even more important, to "illuminate his ear and clarify problems of the Italian society that his era has passed down to the Italy of today."

Volume 2 contains 512 of Pareto's letters, selected from the extant reservoir of over 4,000 letters. Included, among others, are letters to Emilia and Ubaldino Peruzzi,
