Texto rescatado no hace mucho más de un centenar de años del sueño que dormía desde hacía unos 3500 bajo las arenas de Mesopotamia, la epopeya de Gilgamesh es el relato más antiguo del mundo del que tenemos noticia. Sin embargo, el hecho de que sólo haya conservado en forma fragmentaria y en diversas versiones debido a estar recogido en tablillas de arcilla y en escritura cuneiforme ha hecho que normalmente haya quedado confinado a ediciones fragmentarias y eruditas destinadas sobre todo a los especialistas y que convierten su lectura, cuando menos, en un empeño difícil. El gran mérito de la presente versión de Stephen Mitchell es rescatar con sumo tacto y sensibilidad el relato de Gilgamesh para el lector común y corriente en un texto que se puede leer de corrido de principio a fin, sin traicionar por ello en ningún momento el espíritu del original, y teniendo en cuenta las más solventes ediciones eruditas.
