Employé par "l’entreprise" londonienne de Gerald et Les Fletcher, Jack Carter apprend qu’on a retrouvé la voiture de son frère Frank au pied d’une falaise. Son frère est à l’intérieur, pas seulement ivre mort, mais bel et bien mort. Après l’enterrement, Jack commence à poser des questions à certaines personnes. On lui fait rapidement comprendre qu’il ferait mieux de cesser. Frank était un type obéissant ; mais Jack ne lui ressemble pas.Déjà publié sous le titre Le retour de Jack, ce roman a fait l’objet d’une première adaptation cinématographique en 1971, La loi du milieu de Mike Hodges, dans laquelle jouait Michael Caine. Stephen Kay en a fait un remake intitulé Get Carter, avec Sylvester Stallone, Mickey Rourke et...Michael Caine.
