The world's governments, health care, social and voluntary agencies are tackling the growing problem of mental illness in elderly people in diverse ways. Although developed industrial nations have been the first to face the urgent need to develop appropriate services, developing countries with a rapidly changing age structure are now facing a growing demand.

For each issue of the journal a practising psychogeriatrician will be invited to contribute a short article about the state of developments and the styles of service in hisiher own country. Dr. Meinhardt Tropper from the Geriatric Center at Rishon le Zion in Israel is our first contributor.
