During his long career, Professor George P6lya has been a leading figure in the mathematical world. Nine books, some of them translated in many languages, and 249 papers published in professional journals, witness for an enormous activity. An engaging and stimulating teacher, he addressed students and teachers on all levels in a countless series of lectures. His varied scientific work has inspired many in the front ranks of mathematicians, but also innumerable college and secondary school teachers.
